Stroboscopic Vision as a Treatment for Retinal Slip Induced Motion Sickness

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Motion sickness in the general population is a significant problem driven by the increasingly more sophisticated modes of transportation, visual displays, and virtual reality environments. It is important to investigate non-pharmacological alternatives for the prevention of motion sickness for individuals who cannot tolerate the available anti-motion sickness drugs, or who are precluded from medication because of different operational environments. Based on the initial work of Melvill Jones, in which post hoc results indicated that motion sickness symptoms were prevented during visual reversal testing when stroboscopic vision was used to prevent retinal slip, we have evaluated stroboscopic vision as a method of preventing motion sickness in a number of different environments. Specifically, we have undertaken a five part study that was designed to investigate the effect of stroboscopic vision (either with a strobe light or LCD shutter glasses) on motion sickness while: (1) using visual field reversal, (2) reading while riding in a car (with or without external vision present), (3) making large pitch head movements during parabolic flight, (4) during exposure to rough seas in a small boat, and (5) seated and reading in the cabin area of a UH60 Black Hawk Helicopter during 20 min of provocative flight patterns.

Effects of Eye Fixation on Visually Induced Motion Sickness: Are They Caused by Changes in Retinal Slip Velocity?
Watching slowly moving wide field-of-view patterns can cause symptoms of visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) in viewers. A within-subject full factorial experiment was designed to test two hypotheses: 1) when watching patterns rotating at 60 degrees per second (dps), eye fixation increases the peripheral retinal slip velocity leading to a reduction in the levels of VIMS; and 2) when watchin...

متن کاملExtra-retinal signals support the estimation of 3D motion
In natural settings, our eyes tend to track approaching objects. To estimate motion, the brain should thus take account of eye movements, perhaps using retinal cues (retinal slip of static objects) or extra-retinal signals (motor commands). Previous work suggests that extra-retinal ocular vergence signals do not support the perceptual judgments. Here, we re-evaluate this conclusion, studying mo...

During pursuit eye movements, the world around us remains perceptually stable despite the retinal-image slip induced by the eye movement. It is commonly held that this perceptual invariance is achieved by subtracting an internal reference signal, reflecting the eye movement, from the retinal motion signal. However, if the reference signal is too small or too large, a false eye-movement-induced ...
متن کاملSuppression of optokinesis during smooth pursuit eye movements revisited: The role of extra-retinal information
When our eyes track objects that are moving in a richly structured environment, the retinal image of the stationary visual scene inevitably moves over the retina in a direction opposite to the eye movement. Such self-motion-induced global retinal slip usually provides an ideal stimulus for the optokinetic reflex. This reflex operates to compensate for global image flow. However, during smooth p...
